The world's most powerful governments seem ineffective when it comes to combating a problem, which is out of control. Man has been using mind altering substances for thousands of years, but never before has the abuse of alcohol and drugs caused world wide death, destruction and misery on such an enormous scale.
Governments all over the world have declared a "War on Drugs", spending millions of dollars to crack down on dealers and addicts. But their not winning the war. As a matter of fact they’re loosing it. And our world leaders are asking what, if anything, can be done to turn back this rising tide of alcoholism and drug addiction.
In order to tackle a problem, obviously it's important to be able to define the exact nature of that problem. But what exactly is drug abuse? Some dangerous drugs are legal and prescribed by doctors, to the detriment of their patients. Others are illegal and force the addict to obtain them from untrustworthy dealers on the street.
Tobacco, alcohol and inhalants are three of the most often abused substances in the world. They are also the ones that cause the most wide spread damage. All are legal and readily available. Yet the massive abuse of these substances destroys millions of lives each year and the terrible health and social consequences cost the global public billions of dollars.
So should these substances be outlawed? Judging from the prohibition fiasco in the 1920s, it seems the answer is no. It proved that outlawing something that a large number of people want (in this case alcohol) merely drives it underground and creates a highly lucrative black market industry for murderous gangs. America now has some of the toughest anti-drug laws in the world - but hard drugs are easy to come by in schools and on street corners in every major city. Billions of dollars are spent every year on tackling the health, social and criminal fall-out of drug abuse but a relatively paltry sum is dedicated to education, prevention and treatment. In both financial and social terms, the prevention and treatment of addiction seems to make the most sense.
If you or someone you love has ever had a serious alcohol or drug addiction then you know how devastating it can be. Many great men, women, children and their families have been completely destroyed by addiction. Any addiction needs to be dealt with as soon as possible. 2 peter 2:19 says, "-for a man is a slave to what ever has mastered him." Addiction really does become the master of the addict.
Don't be fooled into believing addiction isn't your problem! Even if you have never been the slightest addicted to anything including chocolate, addiction still affects your life every day. Addiction is something we're all paying for one way or another. Higher crime, taxes, health care and on and on.
Help is available through treatment and rehabilitation centers all over the world. The problem is rehabilitation isn't cheap, but it is necessary. Most true addicts can't afford $10,000 -- $100,000 for the treatment they so desperately need.
That's where we come in. DRINC's rehabilitation sponsorship program is designed to help underprivileged men, women, children and their families get the treatment they need.
By providing financial aid DRINC hopes to make a real and lasting difference in the real war on drugs.
